Let me take you back to a few years ago when I had to attend a teacher’s conference in early June. I’ll be honest, I was not thrilled about it. I mean, it was right before final exams, and here I was, being forced to give up a precious day of prep time. But, hey, you can’t exactly tell your administrator, “I’d rather not go”—that could land you teaching in the middle of nowhere, right?

So, I begrudgingly drove 50 miles to Albany State University, fully expecting to be bored out of my mind. But then, something happened that completely changed my perspective. A small woman walked up to the front of the room, introduced herself, and proceeded to blow our minds with her presentation. She showed us how integrated lessons—those that mix reading, writing, speaking, projects, and real-world examples—were transforming classrooms across countries like New Zealand, Australia, and Norway. And the results? World-class literacy achievements.

She demonstrated how these lessons, when used together, created an environment where students didn’t just learn—they thrived. Imagine a classroom where students are actively engaged, collaborating with one another, and genuinely excited to learn. It sounds like a dream, right? But once you get the hang of it, this system makes teaching more fun and rewarding, and students end up learning more than you ever thought possible.

Now, I know it may sound overwhelming at first—mixing all those elements together seems like a lot of work. But once you start implementing it, you’ll see that it not only makes learning more exciting for students, but it also makes your job easier and more enjoyable.
